About California Wage & Employment Rules

California employment law provides broader protections for workers than the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Unlike federal law, which only mandates overtime compensation after 40 hours in a workweek, California mandates daily overtime after 8 hours of work in a workday, daily double time after 12 hours, and special overtime rates when an employee works seven consecutive days in the same workweek.

Our Official-Source Approach

Every California calculator formula implemented by StateWageCalc is extracted directly from the California Labor Code, Industrial Welfare Commission (IWC) Wage Orders, and published interpretations from the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE). We do not use unofficial summaries or approximate estimates as legal bases for our algorithms.
